# Geo Hound > Geo Hound is a free browser extension for Chrome and Microsoft Edge that detects the GIS services behind the web maps you browse — WMS, WFS, ArcGIS FeatureServer and MapServer, tile layers, and geospatial files — then maps, queries, and analyses them in the browser, or hands the URLs to QGIS and ArcGIS Pro. This site carries its documentation and how-to guides. - Free browser extension, currently version 1.9, published on the Chrome Web Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/geo-hound/nooldeimgcodenhncjkjagbmppdinhfe (extension ID nooldeimgcodenhncjkjagbmppdinhfe). - Runs in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge; other Chromium browsers such as Brave also work. In Edge, open the Chrome Web Store listing, choose "Allow extensions from other stores" when the banner appears, then choose Add to Chrome; Edge confirms adding it to Edge. Firefox is not supported. - The detector and workbench are free with no account. It detects OGC services (WMS, WFS, WMTS, WCS, and the OGC API family), Esri ArcGIS REST services (FeatureServer, MapServer, ImageServer, and others), XYZ and vector tiles, and geospatial files (GeoJSON, KML, shapefile, GeoTIFF, GeoPackage). - Detected service URLs can be copied straight into QGIS or ArcGIS Pro, or opened in the built-in workbench for mapping, filtering, buffers, and spatial joins in the browser. - The AI assistant answers plain-English questions about detected data using 26 GIS tools. Questions relay through OpenRouter, which routes to third-party model providers. - Assistant pricing: up to 10 free questions per month, then one-time credit packs from $10 for 250 questions (1 credit per question, credits never expire). Team packs with a shared pool start at $100. - Sold by MapScaping Limited, the company behind the MapScaping podcast (https://mapscaping.com). Support: geohound@mapscaping.com, response within 2 business days. ## Documentation - [How Geo Hound works](https://geohound.app/how-it-works): The full pipeline from installing the extension to finished analysis, in four steps. - [Finding and saving GIS services](https://geohound.app/docs/detector): How the detector catches GIS services as you browse: service cards, CORS tests, copying URLs for QGIS and ArcGIS Pro, and downloading data. - [Using the workbench](https://geohound.app/docs/workbench): Add layers, import files, filter the attribute table, run buffers and spatial joins, symbolize, and export. - [Using the assistant](https://geohound.app/docs/assistant): A prompt cookbook, what data leaves the browser, how credits are spent, and restoring a balance on a new machine. - [Frequently asked questions](https://geohound.app/docs/faq): Short answers on detection coverage, privacy, credits, and troubleshooting. ## Guides - [How to find the WMS URL behind a web map](https://geohound.app/guides/find-wms-url-behind-web-map): Three ways to find the WMS service URL powering a web map: read the capabilities document, dig through the browser network tab, or let a detector catch it automatically. - [How to get the data out of an ArcGIS web map](https://geohound.app/guides/get-data-from-arcgis-web-map): How to find the FeatureServer or MapServer URL behind an ArcGIS web map or Experience Builder app, and pull the underlying data into QGIS or ArcGIS Pro. - [How to extract GIS data from a website](https://geohound.app/guides/extract-gis-data-from-website): A practical guide to extracting geospatial data from a website: what is actually possible, which formats you can get, and where the legal and technical limits are. - [How to find the XYZ tile URL a map is using](https://geohound.app/guides/find-xyz-tile-url): How to identify the XYZ or vector tile template behind a slippy map, what the z/x/y placeholders mean, and how to add the tile layer to QGIS. - [How to open an ArcGIS FeatureServer in QGIS](https://geohound.app/guides/open-featureserver-in-qgis): Step by step: add an ArcGIS FeatureServer or MapServer layer to QGIS using the ArcGIS REST Servers connection, including what to do when the URL will not load. - [How to download GeoJSON or KML from a web map](https://geohound.app/guides/download-geojson-from-web-map): How to get GeoJSON, KML, or a shapefile out of a public web map, including how to export only the area you care about instead of the whole dataset. - [Why a map service will not load in a browser app (CORS)](https://geohound.app/guides/why-wont-service-load-cors): What CORS is, why a WMS or FeatureServer that works fine in QGIS fails in a browser app, how to test it, and what your options are when a service blocks you. - [How to do GIS analysis without installing QGIS](https://geohound.app/guides/browser-gis-analysis-without-qgis): Buffers, spatial joins, and attribute queries on public map data, done in a browser tab.
